Sweet Violets, sweeter than the roses.

Since I am not able to presently create my art, I am finding other ways that I can be creative. I thought this time would be the ideal time to create my first treasury on Etsy. I was thinking of different themes to go with , and I decided on Sweet Violets. There is something so soothing about that color, I am thinking of painting my house purple and cappuchino when we move to SC. My mama always use to sing this song to us when we were little called Sweet Violets, and I always thought it was such a beautiful song. It goes something like this, sweet violets, sweeter than the roses, covered all over from head to toe, covered all over in sweet violets.....

That song was going through my head as I made this collection,

sweet violet, sweeter than the roses.....

the last banana harvest, and slim pickin's

tictoc, we have now been at our empty house in Aloha for almost two weeks. At first we had a lot of fun, making paper outfits, banging our head against the wall and other creative ventures, but  now the kids, and I are getting pretty bored. We are down to Slim Pickins'.
To stave off boredom, and infuse some novelty, I let the kids go and harvest the banana tree in our backyard. Yes, the banana's are still really green and small, but it was all in good fun for them. Being from the Midwest, I am still amazed that I have tropical fruit growing in my yard.

We planted one plant, and now have a small forest, banana "plants only produce fruit one time, and then they die, so they have a lot o babies

King and guardian of the great banana forrest
despite the strained look, she was really having a pictastic time.
savoring the fruit

I even arrangenged  the banana's into a lotus bloom...

The great harvest reminded me of the mango harvest I did when we first arrived here. I thought it was amazing that we had mango trees producing fruit all over the neighborhood, a ripe for the picken'. It was like heaven until I broke out in a strange poison ivy type rash. I went to the doctor, and they indeed assured me I had, "the mango rash"
That's right, mango trees, are in the same family as posion ivy, sumac, and oak. So if you are allergic to one, you are allergic to the other...
That was the end of my mango picken' days, but the banana's are still my our faithful little green friends.

Happy Thursday!!

Respecting your man...

I am putting this out there to anyone who is in a relationship. I am by no means an expert on this matter, I am only speaking from my own experience, and being that I am 29, I am sure it is somewhat limited.

I do know one thing and that is every man, everywhere, desires and requires one thing from his lady, and that is respect. Nothing can make a man stand taller than showing him unconditional respect. Whether he deserves it or not, it is a boundary line that should never be crossed in a relationship.

I know in my marriage I did not know this at first. I think many, many arguments break out as a result of disrespecting your man. If my husband and I disagree on something, again, this is where I shut my mouth and pray.

When I show my husband unconditional respect in my marriage, he treats me like a rare gem.

The same way that we can build our men up by showing them respect, we can tear them down through disrespect. It is not only what we say, but what we do, and our attitude towards them. We can be kind with our words, but our attitude can be completely condescending.

I see this in my sons as well, even at their young age I do feel as though we should respect them as the men that they are, and will become.

The Bible says many things about the way a husband should treat his wife, but only says one thing about the way a wife should  treat her husband.....with respect.

I hope this edified someone.

I am not religious...

and I hope I am never referred to as such. I am a person who tried the whole "Christ thing" 8 years ago, and never looked back. I surely had a whole in my heart, and was longing. My spirit wanted to find it's home. I was very aware of the spiritual realm, and knew there was more to life than what I could see and hear.

I was open to the Bible, and Hindi, and Buddha. I never had any peace though. I was brought under great leadership, and taught what it really meant to be a Christ follower. I was pushed up to the front at alter call laughing in embarrassment. I did not really know what it meant to "get saved" or say "the sinners prayer". After I left service that day (September 14 2002), my life has never been the same. The flowers were brighter, the air had a softer breeze, and when I opened the bible the scripture made sense for the first time.

So, I am not religious, and I hope I am never referred to as such. I was a lost  hurting person, who now knows I have a loving creator,a passionate defender, and a hope for the future.

How I deal with Stress.

Okay we all have stress to different degrees, and stress can be a good thing, as long as it is in balance. A lot of people ask me how I do what I do. Being a Navy wife on a deserted island, having four babies in four years, homeschooling them, working from home selling clothing that I make. All pretty much alone, while maintaining my sanity, home, and health.

Here is my secret.....I do as the scripture says, and I seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

My life could easily fall apart, it is very complex, and I am sure yours is well. When I am overwhelmed, I go to my prayer closet, and pray and ask the Lord to order my steps, and make my way straight. I don't claim negative things on my children.  When I see a character trait that is not good in them instead of speaking it, I keep my mouth shut and pray, until I see it no more. My children are blessings to me because I have spent many, many, many hours praying for them.

To be transparent,  I would say the biggest challenge for me everyday is to keep my head on straight, or in other words, staying productive and cheerful rather than sulky and self destructive. With homeschooling I feel that if I put scripture memorization above all else, the Lord will honor that, and bless my children with a well rounded education.

I use the scripture to transform my mind. For example, I think I had the boldness to step out in starting my own business as a result of Psalm 1. In Psalm 1 the Lord promises that we will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that yields it's fruit in season, and whatever we do shall prosper. When I was attacked with doubt about my ability, I would remember God says WHATEVER I do shall prosper, and that included my business.

I hope that was encouragement to you
Blessings.

medieval barbers and nothing of consequence

okie dokie, so I am trying to keep my blog updated daily. I want my blog to be more than random chatter, in a world filled with random chatter, I want it to mean something, to somebody. I am still trying to figure out what to blog about that would be of any use to people...

I want to listen more, so that I have more to say that matters.

So, until I figured that out I will keep blogging about nothing of consequence. I had fun doing a bit of research on SPAM on my last blog. I am a person that likes random knowledge. I want to know WHY, with everything. There has to be a reason why things are the way they are, what is their origin?

That leads me to today's blog about medieval barbers...

I took my boys to the barber shop to get a fresh haircut. This was my babies first hair cut. I take the lazy gardener approach with hair and boys for the time being...If I get their hair cut super short, that means I have to get their haircut less often, so yes, I went with the ol' high and tight... ( military term for super short)

While at the barber I was drawn to this fellow

the old comforting barber pole

I thought it would be interesting to do a bit of research into the origin of the symbol posted outside of male hair establishments

What I found was very interesting. All of the information was gathered from Wikepedia

*the first barbers in medieval times were actually surgeons
*the history of the pole was associated with bloodletting
*the first barbers also did tooth extractions
*the original pole had a brass wash basin at the top-( a representation of a bowl to keep leaches in), and a brass wash basin at the bottom (a representation of a basin that received the blood)
*the pole itself represented the staff that the patients held unto as they were getting "surgery"
*the red stripes around the pole represented bandages that were placed on the patient after blood letting.
There you go, random knowledge, I thought it was pretty interesting, did you???

Happy Monday!!!
